Empowering Students with AI-Assisted Open-Source Software

Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), 25 October 25, 2024 — The Faculty of Industrial Sciences and Technology (FIST) held a hands-on workshop titled "Mastering Digital Tools: MS Excel & SciDAVis for Undergraduate Students". The event took place on October 25, 2024, from 09:00 AM to 11:00 AM at FIST Mini Theater.

Led by Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Saifful Kamaluddin Muzakir, the workshop aimed to enhance students' data analysis skills. It emphasized using Microsoft Excel for automated calculations and introduced SciDAVis as a powerful, free alternative for advanced graph plotting. This approach aims to promote ethical and professional practices, encouraging the use of licensed and open-source software solutions for academic and research purposes.

The workshop addressed a critical need among students who often depend on Microsoft Excel for data plotting and basic analysis. Participants learned how to automate complex calculations, especially when dealing with large datasets from instruments such as absorption spectrometers. Additionally, the transition to SciDAVis aims to elevate the quality of scientific reports and research papers produced by students, giving them a competitive edge in their studies and future careers.

Beyond mastering traditional software, the session introduced the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to simplify formula generation and coding, providing a glimpse into the future of data processing in scientific research. Students left the workshop better equipped to handle data analysis tasks, making them more marketable and competent when entering the workforce.

The event was part of a broader effort by the faculty to ensure that students are not only proficient in modern digital tools but also adhere to ethical practices in software usage. By encouraging the adoption of open-source solutions like SciDAVis, UMPSA aims to foster a culture of innovation and sustainability.
