HIDROGREEN INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO FEFIFO: INSPIRING COMMUNITIES THROUGH SUSTAINABLE MUSHROOM CULTIVATION
21 March 2025 | Rawang, Selangor
An inspiring industrial visit was carried out by Hidrogreen, a startup company under the Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), to Fefifo, a commercial mushroom cultivation facility and mushroom-based product manufacturing factory located in Rawang, Selangor.
The visit, which took place on Friday, 21st March 2025 at 10:30 AM, was attended by 14 students from University Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), accompanied by Associate Professor Dr. Tan Suat Hian (UMPSA) and school board representatives from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Maran. This program aimed to provide hands-on learning about oyster mushroom cultivation techniques and to raise awareness among the community on the importance of sustainable food production.
During the visit, the founder of Fefifo gave a concise yet insightful briefing on how to care for and maintain healthy mushroom plants such as moisture control, contamination prevention and the idea environmental conditions for healthy growth. Each participant, including the students, advisor, and school board representatives from SMK Maran, received a mushroom spawn bag as a practical takeaway. Although the team did not prepare the spawn bags themselves, detailed instructions were given on how to care for and grow the mushrooms at home.
This initiative aligns with Hidrogreen’s mission to educate the community, especially the parents of SMK Maran students to help B40 families on how to grow their own mushrooms sustainably to reduce daily household expenses.
Oyster mushrooms were chosen as the first step in this initiative due to their ease of care, minimal space requirements, and relatively fast harvesting cycle.
Through this collaboration between the university and the community, Hidrogreen hopes to make a lasting impact by encouraging sustainable urban farming practices and promoting food self-sufficiency, especially among underprivileged families.
This visit demonstrated that knowledge acquired in universities can be effectively channelled into the community for a more sustainable and empowered future.
