Industrial Visit to FGV Refineries Sdn. Bhd. Enhances Students’ Understanding of Unit Operations

An educational industrial visit for the BSK3143 Unit Operation course was successfully conducted at FGV Refineries Sdn. Bhd., Kuantan, involving 25 third-year students from the Bachelor of Industrial Sciences and Technology programme accompanied by two lecturers.
The visit was led by Dr. Siti Noor Hidayah Mustapha as part of an initiative to strengthen students’ understanding of industrial operations and complement the theoretical concepts learned in the classroom.
The programme commenced with an introductory briefing by the Administrative Executive, Pn. Aziera, who provided an overview of FGV Refineries Sdn. Bhd., its organisational background, and refinery operations. The briefing offered students valuable insights into the company’s role in the palm oil processing industry and its contribution to the national economy.
The session continued with an informative sharing by the Operation Engineer, Pn. Fatin Najihah, who explained the key unit operations involved in the refining process, plant process flow, and the importance of maintaining efficient and safe operational control in daily production activities. The session was further enriched by contributions from the Plant Manager and a Senior Engineer, who shared their professional experiences, discussed operational challenges encountered in refinery operations, and highlighted the competencies and expectations required of engineers in industrial environments.
Throughout the visit, students actively participated in discussions and posed relevant questions related to unit operations, process engineering, and industrial practices. Their enthusiasm demonstrated a strong interest in bridging theoretical concepts with practical industrial applications.
Overall, the industrial visit provided a meaningful learning experience, enhanced students’ exposure to real-world refinery operations, and strengthened their understanding of the practical implementation of unit operation principles in the palm oil refining industry. The programme also supported FSTI’s continuous efforts to produce industry-ready graduates equipped with both technical knowledge and practical experience.
