BACKGROUND

The  Biological Science (BioSphere) research cluster was established in 2015. The cluster primarily focuses on performing research on resources derived from Malaysia's rich biodiversity found in the sea, land, and atmosphere. Our cluster anticipates member collaborations for research enhancement, as well as connections with groups across UMP and external organisations at both the national and international levels. Our natural product experts are capable of screening natural resources such as medicinal plants for significant biological activities and consequently standardising the procedures of extraction, fractionation and isolation of pharmaceutical lead compounds. The mechanism or mode of action at cellular or molecular level of these samples can be further investigated by our “omics” scientists using their respective tools. Ideally, functional group modifications or complete synthetic build up can be achieved with the know-how inherent by our organic synthesis scientists. Our group's capability does not end here, but rather continues with contributions from the diagnostic discipline, which utilizes state-of-the-art biosensors to study the interaction of lead compounds with physiological biomolecules. This is just one example of how we can work together to provide a comprehensive overview of our capabilities. Without a doubt, each of these disciplines has great potential and achievement on its own.

VISSION

To be a renowned group with world class research in converting natural resources (e.g. standardized plants extracts or lead compounds or cells or enzymes etc.) contained in the rich biodiversity of Malaysia into efficacious yet safe herbal drugs, better pharmaceutical drugs or highly sorted biosensors.
