FIST Showcases “Citizen Scientists: Know Your Water Quality” Exhibition at Run for Peace 2025

Kuantan, 7 September 2025 – A team led by Dr. Nurul ’Azyyati Sabri from the Faculty of Industrial Sciences and Technology (FIST), Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), comprising 18 staff and students, successfully organized an educational exhibition titled “Citizen Scientists: Know Your Water Quality”.

The exhibition was held in conjunction with the Run for Peace program organized by Soka Gakkai Pahang Branch at SJKC Kwang Hwa, Indera Mahkota 14, Kuantan. The run gathered about 1,900 participants, ranging from adults to children.

The exhibition aimed to raise public awareness on environmental preservation, particularly water quality, and to highlight the role of citizens in safeguarding the environment. Visitors had the opportunity to:

  • Gain hands-on experience in conducting water quality testing
  • Learn about different water quality parameters
  • Make their own mudballs, an eco-friendly tool used to improve the quality of environmental water bodies

Notably, YB Tuan Lee Chin Chen, the Deputy Speaker of the Pahang State Legislative Assembly also attended the program and joined the mudball-making activity at the Citizen Scientists booth.

This program is a continuation of the SULAM (Service Learning Malaysia – University for Society) initiative by the Ministry of Higher Education, which was previously held on 31 May 2025 at Taman Gelora Kuantan in collaboration with Majlis Bandaraya Kuantan (MBK).

Through this initiative, FIST continues its efforts to bring science closer to the community, nurturing responsible citizens who are empowered to take part in environmental conservation.
