SULAM Programme for BPS3213 Occupational Epidemiology at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Damai

18 November 2025 | Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Damai
The SULAM Programme for BPS3213 Occupational Epidemiology was successfully conducted on 18 th November 2025 at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Damai, involving 45 Bachelor of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) students from Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) and 50 Form 4 school students. The programme took place from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and aimed to strengthen university–community engagement through meaningful knowledge-sharing activities.

This programme provided a platform for OSH students to apply their theoretical knowledge of occupational epidemiology in a real-world community setting. It also enabled them to demonstrate their understanding of course content while promoting health awareness, disease prevention, and healthy lifestyle practices among adolescents.

A variety of interactive and student-centred learning activities were conducted, including exhibitions, health awareness talks, screening questionnaires, and hands-on demonstrations facilitated by the UMPSA students. The activities focused on key public health themes, including Communicable Diseases (CD), Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD), and Mental Health. Specific topics covered included influenza, HIV/AIDS, EVALI, diabetes, anxiety, depression, and stress, which are increasingly
prevalent among teenagers. Evaluation activities were also carried out to assess the understanding of SMK Seri Damai students and to reinforce key messages delivered by the facilitators.

The programme successfully achieved its main objectives, particularly in strengthening the connection between university students and the community through the application of academic knowledge to practical, real-life contexts. Through this community-based learning initiative, awareness of disease prevention and health-promoting behaviours was effectively enhanced. At the same time, Bachelor of OSH students gained valuable experiential learning that deepened their understanding of occupational epidemiology,
communicable and non-communicable diseases, and mental health issues. The programme committee would like to express its deepest gratitude to the Faculty of Industrial Sciences and Technology and the Centre for Industry & Community Linkages, UMPSA, for granting approval for the programme and providing essential financial support that enabled the smooth and successful execution of this SULAM initiative. Special thanks are also extended to the lecturer committee members: Dr Mohd Shahril bin Abu Hanifah, Dr. Junaidah binti Zakaria, Dr. Afiza Abdullah Suhaimi, Dr. Mohd Khairul Izamil bin Zolkefley, Mdm. Nir Fazhilah binti Abdul Razak, and Ms. Zarifah binti Sahri, whose commitment, cooperation, and continuous support were instrumental to the success of this SULAM initiative. This programme reflects the faculty’s ongoing efforts to strengthen university–school collaboration while nurturing competent, socially responsible, and community-oriented future OSH professionals.
