An Exposure to Quantum Chemical Calculations through the Global Classroom Platform

The Faculty of Industrial Sciences and Technology (FIST), Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) recently hosted a Global Classroom session on Computational Superconductivity Using Density Functional Theory (DFT). This collaborative event, held on 17 October 2024, brought together academics and students from UMPSA, Bolu Abant Izzet Baysal Universitesi (BAIBU) and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), creating a valuable platform for learning and discussion.

The session featured Prof. Dr. Cihan Parlak from Fen Edebiyat Fakultesi, BAIBU, Turkey, who presented the principles of superconductivity, focusing on the application of DFT in studying and predicting the behavior of superconducting materials. His presentation covered the theoretical framework of DFT, challenges in modelling electronic structures, and a case study on CaB₂, a compound with promising superconducting properties.

Prof. Dr. Parlak’s talk was supported by Ts. Dr. Suhadir bin Shamsuddin from UTHM, who facilitated the discussion and Q&A session. This segment provided participants with the opportunity to engage further in the practical aspects of computational superconductivity, including the use of software like Abinit for DFT calculations. The session was hosted by Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Saifful Kamaluddin bin Muzakir from UMPSA, who emphasized the importance of such collaborations for research and academic growth. This event was specifically designed for students enrolled in the BSP3452 Advanced Materials Laboratory course, providing them with essential insights and inputs to support their learning and research in the field of computational materials science.

More than 40 participants, including students, researchers, and academicians joined this virtual session via Microsoft Teams. The event not only enabled knowledge exchange but also smoothened the way for future collaborations between UMPSA, UTHM, and BAIBU in advanced materials. For those who missed the live event, the complete recording is available on the SKM Edu Channel on YouTube. Viewers can also access event photos and download the detailed presentation slides by Prof. Dr. Parlak, providing a valuable resource for those interested in density functional theory and its role in the study of superconductors.

This Global Classroom initiative highlights FIST's dedication to providing quality education and fostering a global network of learners and experts. By leveraging technology and international partnerships, FIST continues to lead in promoting research and knowledge-sharing within the scientific community.
