The Career Talk | Industrial Chemistry
The Career Talk for Year 4 Industrial Chemistry students was held on 8 October 2025 at the Library Auditorium, UMPSA. Four invited speakers from the public sector, academia and industry were featured in the session. The invited speakers were ChM. Mr. Mohamad Hanif Bin Omar (Deputy Director, Department of Chemistry Malaysia, Pahang), ChM. Ts. Dr. Thomas Wun Wee Long (Managing Director/Environmental Consultant, TW Environmental Sdn. Bhd.), ChM. Ts. Dr. Shamsul Bin Zakaria (Senior Lecturer, UMPSA), and Mr. Lai Yew Chong (Assistant Manager/Technical Services, KLK Oleochemicals Malaysia). The speakers shared valuable insights and professional advice, providing students with meaningful exposure to career opportunities in the chemistry field.
Throughout the session, the speakers emphasized the importance of developing soft skills such as effective communication, critical thinking, adaptability to technological changes and lifelong learning. They also highlighted that current industry trends are moving toward digitalization and automation. The speakers encouraged students to acquire not only academic qualifications, but also hands-on experience and a strong project portfolio.
The concept of lifelong learning was further stressed as a crucial element in building individual competitiveness. The talk was regarded as highly informative and is expected to serve as an important guide in shaping students’ professional development priorities and networking strategies.
